Mandy's Review:

Cover

The cover is interesting to look at.  I don't know that it is one of my favorites, but it is a well put-together cover.

Plot

This book takes the elements of good vs. evil, angels and demons and psychic visions and presents them in a new, yet familiar, way.  The story line was a recognizable love triangle mixed with danger, tragedy and teen angst.

The author wrote it in first-person style, but switched back and forth between the two main characters.  Some may find this confusing, but I enjoyed getting to see the inside of both characters.  It helps the reader to better understand various situations and why the characters make some of the decisions they do.

Main Characters

Patrick - An 18-year-old artistic young man who dies in his very first battle as a member of the United Irishmen.  He only joined the organization because of his father's threat.  At death, he had a choice to become a Guardian or go to Heaven.  He chose to become a Guardian and that's how we know him throughout the book.

As a Guardian, Patrick is strong, thoughtful, hard when necessary and a great protector.

Kate - The oldest of three siblings, we meet Kate on the first day of the new school year.  Her parents have recently died as a result of a car accident.  Kate almost died in the same accident, but survived ... as a different type of person.

To help supply stability, her grandparents move into her home to raise her and her two sisters.

Because of Kate's near-death experience, she is now able to see people's auras.  She doesn't realize that her ability classifies her as a Seer until she meets Patrick.

Overall

Generally speaking, the book was well written.  There was one part that I felt didn't sound plausible, but other than that, I enjoyed it.

The story is familiar, but with enough variances to make it worth the time to read.  I would recommend it to young adults and young adult book lovers.
